Anyway, Joe went out there and saw she had been prying apart the wire bars on the kennel so he fixed them the best he could while he let her out to potty and run around the yard. She was kenneled again and a few minutes later, started yelping again. No reason why, she just hated being kenneled. He told her to be quiet and went back into the house. Few minutes later, yelping again. So we both went back there and noticed she was laying curled up in the kennel, not yelping, and not moving. Just like she was asleep. She wouldn't turn around or get up when I called her. We opened her kennel and she was limp, but breathing heavily. Joe got her into the garage and her bladder emptied. I saw the wire sticking inward on the kennel...with blood and dog hair. We found the puncture wound in her back. I was scared she was paralyzed because she was not moving. Totally limp. I ran inside and called for the emergency vet's office. Grabbed a comforter, a check, and ran to Joe in the garage. He wrapped her up and rushed her to the vet in another town while I paced at home with Bayley asleep and Z taking a bath.
My husband calls a couple of times, updating me...crying each time. Then he calls me, sobbing, saying Deejay has advanced hip dysplasia, cataracts in both eyes, and a wound to her colon. There's probably fluid in her chest along with sepsis. There are 3 options: operate to repair the colon ($1000 - $5000) and give her meds for her hip dysplasia, the second option is "client-budget friendly" and is "geared to your budget" which means they'll do whatever you can afford to do, or the third is to put her to sleep. The first two options do not mean that the third option is preventable, so no matter what... Deej will always be in pain (especially with the winter months in full force) and we can treat it but it won't ever be gone. Joe was so heartbroken because he got Deej as a puppy from a ghetto and raised her. She was his best friend through many tough years when he had no one else.
Deejay has protected us from burglars. We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment when we first moved in together. One night Joe was gone and it was just Z, me, and Baleigh (my sheltie that I had to put to sleep 8.24.07). Deej was barking and clawing at my bedroom window. I was scared because she never did that. Found out the next day that the apt next to us had gotten broken into and our screen was off the window. She definitely saved us from that.
Joe called me again on his way home, sobbing. He had her put to sleep and I couldn't understand a word he said. I cried with him, feeling so awful for him and it brought up memories of when I had Baleigh put to sleep. I cried myself to sleep until he finally came home. He came into the garage and got a shovel to go bury her in the woods. Very fitting, considering she LOVED being outside. She liked to run up and down the fence, making a dirt path alongside the fence.
Deejay was the softest dog I've ever known. She was NEVER dirty, despite becoming an outside dog when we had Bayley. She never stunk and was always SO so soft. She had this "Hitler 'stache" on her lip. And her right ear was crooked, which was my FAVORITE thing about her. That, and being fluffy, soft, non-stinky, and her Hitler 'stache. She was a sweet, loyal girl who LOVED to go for car rides.
I have this photo of her that I need to somehow get onto this computer so I can post it. It shows just how much she adored Joe. However, for now, here are two other pics I have of her:
